With crispy puff pasty, crunchy everything but the bagel seasoning, this Gourmet Pigs in a Blanket recipe is delicious. Pigs in a Blanket is a nostalgic appetizer known for being easy, but never sophisticated. My recipe makes it both, buttery soft and perfectly spiced pigs in a blanket. The perfect appetizer recipe for the Super Bowl.

Pigs in a Blanket: The Gold Standard of Appetizers

In the culinary world the hotdog is deemed the ugly step child of proteins. Actually, I'm not sure it even constitutes as a protein. But as you wrap a pasty around that mini mystery meat, I guarantee even the snobbiest of chefs would dip that sucker in some mustard and scarf it down. So when I got the itch for a pigs in a blanket, which was a real craving I had at twenty six years old, I decided I'd try to make a version to impress. I cook mostly for praise of other people, but this recipe was so good I ate it all before anyone else could try.

My gourmet pigs in a blanket doesn't stray far from the bones of the original. I wanted to keep the recipe simple and quick, just like the fifteen minute prep of the original pigs in a blanket recipe. To add a little fancy edge, I coated the pigs in a blanket in everything bagel seasoning as well as a vinegary and bright red cabbage slaw.

How to Host: Where to serve Gourmet Pigs in a Blanket

My Gourmet Pigs in a Blanket recipe is perfect for a quick appetizer at home or easy enough to make ahead and bring to friends. With the Super Bowl in just a few weeks, I really couldn't have thought of this recipe at a better time! Whether you're staying at home for the Super Bowl or making it a big day, this appetizer is easy and sure to make even the most skeptical eaters happy.

To elevate the presentation, make sure to use a wood board or large platter for display, with a few bowls for condiments. With a simple switch from the baking sheet to a wood serving board, my gourmet pigs in a blanket make their mark.

Another note, although you won't see any ketchup called for in this recipe, it is best to keep some on hand for those particularly picky eaters.

If you're having a smaller gathering, split the recipe in half!

How to make Gourmet Pigs in a Blanket:

  1. Roll out the puff pastry: let the puff pastry thaw on counter for 20 minutes before unfolding from the box. Flour a clean flat surface and place first sheet on top. You only want to thin the pasty slightly, two rolls with the pin, stretching it 3 - 4 inches from where it started.

  2. Wrap hotdogs: using a sharp knife or a pizza cutter, cut 1 inch thick strips, cutting the strips with the longest side of the pastry. Beat egg in a small cup to prepare for rolling. With a pastry brush, swipe beaten egg on one strip of puffed pastry (do this one at a time so the pastry doesn't get soggy). Start at the tip of the hot dog and wrap the puff pastry around the hot dog, like you're wrapping a mummy. Make sure the puff pastry is overlapping itself by half, you will use 1 1/2 - 2 strip per hot dog. Make sure to wipe beaten egg on each strip and follow the connection as best you can. Repeat until you run out of pastry, roll out next pastry sheet and repeat steps. (KEEP the Egg).

  3. Chill pigs in a blanket: after all hot dogs are wrapped place on a lined baking sheet and chill in freezer or fridge, wherever you have room to store the pan. Chill for 10-30 minutes. Preheat the oven while the pigs in a blanket are chilling to 400 degree Fahrenheit.

  4. Make red cabbage coleslaw: in a bowl combine coleslaw dressing, red wine vinegar, salt and pepper. Sliced red cabbage, or buy it pre-sliced if you don't hate yourself. Combine cabbage with the dressing and set aside until service.

  5. Bake pigs in a blanket: remove the pigs in a blanket and brushed with egg to coat with everything but the bagel seasoning (1 -2 tsp per blanket). Bake at 400 degrees for 25-30 minutes, rotating the pan half way through. The gourmet pigs in a blanket should be golden brown, but make sure not to burn the everything but the bagel seasoning.
